💓 Heartbeat of History

Matthews Heritage Museum
Did you know that The Reid House, located at 134 West John Street, was built in 1890 by Edward Solomon Reid? It is one of the few remaining Victorian houses in the area. Mr. Reid sold the house to his sister Ellen in 1893, the year she married Dr. Thomas Neely Reid from Sharon Township, no relation to the Reid family from Matthews. Dr. Reid served the citizens of Matthews for over 55 years.

The house is named for Miss Nancy Reid, the youngest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Ellen Reid. She was born in the house on January 9, 1898, and lived there until her death on January 25, 1986. She was well educated and taught in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System for 35 years. Mrs. Sarah Redd, a niece of Miss Nancy's, inherited the house upon her death. Mrs. Redd generously gifted the house and property to the Matthews Historical Foundation on December 31, 1987.

😁 Fun Fact… A former livery stable and cotton gin waiting room still exists as part of downtown fabric
Behind downtown Trade Street once stood the Renfrow cotton gin and the Funderburk livery stable. While the gin is gone, the little building on “Cotton Gin Alley” (where folks waited while their cotton was being processed) still remains and is part of the downtown walking tour.

🌽 Taste of the Week

Sausage and cheese cornbread recipe

This savory cornbread recipe combines classic Southern ingredients for a delicious fall comfort food. Sourcing local sausage and sharp cheddar cheese from the Matthews Farmers' Market can elevate the flavor. This recipe makes about 12 servings.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground pork sausage

  • 1½ cups self-rising cornmeal mix

  • 2 large eggs

  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided

  • 1½ cups buttermilk

  • 1 small onion, chopped (optional)

  • 1 (15 oz.) can cream-style corn (optional)

  • Chopped green onion, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Grease a baking dish (a 10-inch cast-iron skillet or 9x13-inch baking dish works well).

  2. In a skillet, cook the ground sausage over medium heat until it is browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.

  3. In a large bowl, mix the cooked sausage, self-rising cornmeal mix, eggs, buttermilk, and one cup of the shredded cheddar cheese. If using, stir in the chopped onion and cream-style corn.

  4. Pour the mixture into your prepared baking dish.

  5. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. Sprinkle the remaining cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the cornbread during the last few minutes of baking, until it is melted and bubbly.

  7. Let cool slightly before serving. Garnish with chopped green onion.
