Renfrow Hardware
Tucked in downtown Matthews is a place that blends nostalgia, gardening, and hardware know-how into one charming community hub—one visit may change how you view your own backyard.
What’s Renfrow Hardware all about?
Renfrow is a 120+ year old hardware & general store at 188 N Trade St, Matthews, honoring its roots while serving modern needs. They specialize beyond nails and screws: edible gardening products, greenhouse plants, baby chicks & poultry supplies, locally harvested honey, and more.
Their sister venture, Renfrow Farms, cultivates seasonal produce, hosts gardening classes, and helps reconnect Matthews residents to their agricultural heritage.
The store also offers helpful resources: seed & crop guides, “tip sheets” for raising chickens and gardening, and a staff ready to answer those tricky house-and-yard questions.
They operate Tuesday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, and remain closed Saturday through Monday.

Sausage and Cheese Cornbread
This savory cornbread highlights classic Southern ingredients, making it a fall comfort food. Locally-sourced sausage and cheese are often available at the Matthews Farmers' Market.
Ingredients:
Cooked ground sausage, self-rising cornmeal mix, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, buttermilk, eggs, and chopped green onion.
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 400°F and grease a baking dish. Mix all ingredients except green onion and pour into the dish. Bake for 20–25 minutes. Garnish with green onion before serving.
